Cambridge biotech company Nuclera has appointed Carl Raimond as CEO in a move that sees co-founder Dr Michael Chen transition to the role of Chief Scientific and Business Officer.

The company says the leadership change marks the next phase in Nuclera’s evolution as it builds on more than a decade of expertise in cell-free protein synthesis, digital microfluidics and protein production.

Raimond joins Nuclera from Thermo Fisher Scientific, where he served as President of Proteomic Sciences following its acquisition of Olink Proteomics. He previously served as President of Olink Proteomics, helping lead the company through its $3.1 billion acquisition by Thermo Fisher Scientific in 2023.

As Chief Scientific and Business Officer, Dr Michael Chen will focus on scientific strategy, market development and strategic partnerships.

Raimond said: “Nuclera has built a differentiated technology platform at the intersection of cell-free protein synthesis, digital microfluidics, and protein discovery. I’m excited to join the Company as we sharpen our focus on customer adoption, commercial execution, and expanding applications of our technology across life-science workflows.

“Michael’s scientific leadership remains central to Nuclera’s future, and I look forward to working with him and the team to translate this strong technology foundation into impactful solutions for our customers.”

Nuclera is applying its cell-free protein synthesis and digital microfluidics capabilities to accelerate the speed of protein science, with current focus areas including full-length IgG antibody screening, challenging membrane protein synthesis, and soluble protein expression.

In May 2026, the Company launched antibody service capabilities to support early experimental triage for antibody discovery programs, complementing its eProtein Discovery™ system for in-house protein expression and screening.

The Company is also extending its antibody strategy beyond centralised service delivery. Nuclera is advancing early partner work toward customer-site antibody screening workflows, designed to bring cell-free expression and binding triage closer to AI-enabled discovery teams and reduce the delay between computational design and experimental evidence.

Dr Chen said: “As a structural biologist, I know firsthand the time and frustration protein production can cost a development program. That frustration is part of why we started Nuclera. I’m incredibly proud of what the team has built and the difference our technology is already making for protein scientists.

“Now, we’ve reached an important point in the Company’s evolution, and Carl is the right CEO to lead us forward. Carl’s experience building and scaling life-science businesses, combined with his understanding of the opportunity ahead, will be a huge asset to Nuclera. I’m excited to work alongside him to bring that impact to every benchtop.”
